Pirates pitcher Dillon Peters was out for more than a month.

The Pittsburgh Pirates got a boost to their bullpen with the return of left-handed reliever Dillon Peters, who was activated Tuesday from the 15-day injured list after missing more than a month with a lower back strain.

Peters is 4-2 with a 3.86 ERA and 1.17 WHIP over 25 2/3 innings in 16 appearances, including four starts, and opponents were batting .161 against him this season.

The timing of Peters’ return could be valuable, especially with right-handed reliever Chris Stratton starting Tuesday night at the Miami Marlins. It marks Stratton’s first start since April 23, 2019, when he pitched for the Los Angeles Angels. Stratton since has made 161 relief appearances and has only pitched more than three innings once.

To make room on the active roster for Peters, the Pirates optioned left-handed reliever Eric Stout to Triple-A Indianapolis. Stout allowed one run in 1 2/3 innings over two appearances, hitting a pair of batters and striking out two.

Outfielder Greg Allen, who suffered a left hamstring strain in spring training and started the season on the injured list, took a step closer to returning.

After spending time with Low-A Bradenton, Allen will continue his rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Indianapolis.

Infielder Josh Bissonette and right-handed pitcher Cristofer Melendez were transferred from Indianapolis to Double-A Altoona.
