Pirates farm report for May 25, 2022: Mason Martin homers, drives in 5 for Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS (Triple-A, 22-19) split a doubleheader with St. Paul (Twins), winning 16-10 and losing 5-3. In the opener, Indianapolis’ bats heated up. RF Bligh Madris (.247) went 3 for 4 with an RBI double and a solo home run. 1B Mason Martin (.260) continued his hot streak with a three-run homer, his 10th, and finished the night with five RBIs. CF Travis Swaggerty (.253) and 2B Cole Tucker (.095) each drove in two runs. RHP Jerad Eickhoff (5.34) went four innings, allowing four runs on three hits and striking out four. LHP Aaron Fletcher (1.13) got the win, pitching two innings and allowing just two hits.

In the second game, Indy scored in the first inning when SS Oneil Cruz (.199) scored from third on an error on a pickoff attempt at first base. St. Paul scored a run in the fourth and fifth, but the Indians plated two runs on walks by C Jason Delay and 3B Josh Bissonette with the bases full. RF Canaan Smith-Njigba (.250) went 3 for 4 with a double and Martin had a single. RHP Matt Eckelman (12.89) started and went two innings, allowing two hits and striking out one. St Paul got to Indianapolis’ late-inning relievers for three runs in the bottom of the sixth. LHP Cam Vieaux went 1.2 innings and allowed two runs on two hits. RHP Cristofer Melendez (3.78) got saddled with the loss, going recording one out and allowing two runs on two hits.

ALTOONA (Double-A, 20-21) beat Harrisburg (Nationals), 7-1. The Curve bats continued to produce as the offense scored three runs in both the sixth and ninth innings to claim a third straight victory. DH Liover Peguero (.324) went 2 for 3 with two doubles, a walk and a run. RF Matt Gorski (.333) had a single and scored in the sixth on a three-run homer from INF Aaron Shackleford (.226). LF Matt Frazier (.187) had an RBI double in the ninth and 2B Nick Gonzales (.244) continued his up-and-down May by going 1 for 5 with two strikeouts. RHP Carmen Mlodzinski (4.30) went 3.2 innings, struck out five and allowed one run on five hits. RHP Will Kobos (4.00) pitched 1.1 innings and allowed no runs or hits and struck out three to grab the win.

Next: Thursday at Harrisburg (Nationals), 6:30 p.m.

GREENSBORO (High-A, 19-21) beat Asheville (Astros), 3-0. Four Grasshoppers pitchers combined to strike out 11 Asheville batters and allow just two singles in a two-hit shutout to win their fourth straight. RHP Jack Carey (3.92) went three innings and allowed one hit and struck out four. RHP Santiago Florez (7.06) went two innings and struck out three to pick up the win. RHP Logan Hoffman (3.09) struck out one in an inning, and RHP Sean Sullivan (4.97) gave up a hit and struck out three in three innings. 3B Dariel Lopez (.230) smacked a two-run homer in the first and CF Hudson Head (.259) drove in a run on a groundout in the seventh.

Next: Wednesday at Asheville (Astros), 6:35 p.m.

BRADENTON (Low-A, 19-22) lost to Fort Myers (Twins), 10-2 in seven innings. In a weather-shortened game, the only lightning the Marauders offense saw was in the sky. CF Sergio Campana (.231) hit one of his two singles in the fourth and scored on RF Rodolfo Nolasco’s (.211) home run in the fourth inning, and those were all the hits Bradenton would get. On the mound, RHP Valentin Linarez (7.13) went three innings and allowed four runs on four hits and struck out four in a loss. RHP Carlos Lomeli (5.82) came on in the fifth and allowed six runs on five hits and struck out three in his two frames.
