Pirates farm report for May 22, 2021: Ke'Bryan Hayes starts rehab assignment, goes 1 for 2

INDIANAPOLIS (Triple-A, 11-5) beat St. Paul (Twins), 5-1. 3B Ke’Bryan Hayes began a rehab assignment, going 1 for 2 with a first-pitch single through the right side of the infield in his first at-bat and a strikeout in his second. He played three innings in the field. Hayes has been out with a wrist injury since the second game of the season. LF Hunter Owen, who moved to third base when Hayes left the game, homered. C Joe Hudson went 2 for 3 with a double and a home run. DH Kevin Kramer went 2 for 3 with two RBIs. LF Troy Stokes Jr. also went 2 for 3. RHP Chase De Jong allowed one one on four hits in six innings, fanning six. He’s 2-0 with a 3.60 ERA. RHP Steven Wright, the veteran knuckleballer, didn’t allow a hit in two winnings. LHP Austin David pitched a scoreless ninth.

Next: Sunday at St. Paul (Twins), 3:05 p.m.

ALTOONA (Double-A, 10-6) lost 6-3 to Harrisburg (Nationals). 2B Rodolfo Castro went 1 for 3 with a two-run home run, his second of the season. He’s hitting .311. SS Oneil Cruz went 2 for 4 to improve his average to .245. LF Canaan Smith-Njigba went 2 for 4 with an RBI. He’s hitting .310 with a .982 OPS. RHP Osvaldo Bido started and was effective in five innings, giving up one run on one hit, striking out three and walking two. The bullpen gave up five runs in three innings.

Next: Sunday at Harrisburg (Nationals), 1 p.m.

GREENSBORO (High-A, 9-8) lost 7-2 to Hickory (Rangers). Three Hickory pitchers combined to two-hit the Grasshoppers, who struck out 17 times. 1B Will Mathiessen went 1 for 4 with a single and two RBIs. CF Matt Gorski doubled. LHP Omar Cruz started and went three innings, giving up four hits and one run, striking out five. RHP Garrett Leonard gave up three runs in two innings of relief.

Next: Sunday at Hickory (Rangers), 3 p.m.

BRADENTON (Low-A, 9-8) beat Lakeland (Tigers), 7-6. C Endy Rodriguez went 2 for 5 with a triple and two RBIs for the Marauders, who scored five runs in the second inning. He’s hitting .298. 2B Jase Bowen and LF Sammy Siani each went 1 for 3 with a triple. SS Maikol Escotto went 1 for 3 to up his average to .317. RHP J.C. Flowers started and went three innings, allowing two runs and striking out five. He has a 2.08 ERA in five appearances. RHP Oliver Mateo struck out the side in the ninth for his first save.
