Pirates' Edgar Santana suspended 80 games for positive PED test

Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Edgar Santana has been suspended for 80 games, without pay, after testing positive for Boldenone, a performance-enhancing substance, in violation of Major League Baseball’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

Santana, 28, missed the entire 2019 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery at the end of 2018. He was an effective relief pitcher for most of that season, his rookie year, with a 3.26 ERA and 1.101 WHIP in 69 games.

He was sent to Triple-A Indianapolis earlier this year.

“The Pirates are disappointed to learn of today’s news that Edgar Santana has received an 80-game suspension as a result of a violation of Major League Baseball’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program,” General Manager Ben Cherington said in a statement. “Because of the confidentiality requirements of the Program, we will not have further comment on this matter.”
