The Pirates claimed right-handed pitcher Carson Fulmer from the Tigers on Monday.

The Pittsburgh Pirates’ quest for pitching resumed Monday when they claimed right-hander Carson Fulmer off waivers from the Detroit Tigers.

To make room for Fulmer on the 40-man roster, outfielder Guillermo Heredia was designated for assignment. Heredia was the Pirates’ starting right fielder in the season opener, but he appeared in only eight games and hit .188 before he was optioned to the alternate training site in Altoona on Aug. 5.

Fulmer, 26, appeared in seven games for the Tigers this season, allowing eight hits and five earned runs while striking out seven in 6 2/3 innings. He was designated for assignment Aug. 20.

Fulmer was a first-round draft choice (eighth overall) of the Chicago White Sox in 2015. He was teammates with the Pirates’ Bryan Reynolds at Vanderbilt. In three seasons at Vanderbilt, Fulmer was 24-3, with a 1.99 ERA and 313 strikeouts in 271 1/3 innings.

Fulmer reached the major leagues after only one season in the minors and was in the White Sox system for four seasons, compiling a 6-9 record and 6.57 ERA in 51 major league games (15 starts). He was claimed by the Tigers on July 25.
