Pirates add 5 players to major league roster
The Pittsburgh Pirates bolstered their roster for the final 25 games of the season Tuesday when they added four players from Triple-A Indianapolis and a pitcher previously claimed off waivers.
Joining the team are catcher Steven Baron, outfielder Jason Martin, shortstop Cole Tucker, right-handed pitcher Yacksel Rios and left-hander Wei-Chung Wang, claimed from Oakland on Saturday.
Baron, 28, made brief major-league appearances with the Seattle Mariners in 2015 and St. Louis Cardinals last year, getting one hit in 16 total at-bats. He hit .180 with two home runs and eight RBIs for Indianapolis this season.
Martin, who was part of the return from the Houston Astros in the Gerrit Cole trade last year, batted .259 with a .419 slugging percentage, eight home runs and 50 RBIs in 101 games in Indianapolis. He played 19 games with the Pirates earlier this season, going 9 for 36 (.250).
Tucker, the Pirates’ 2014 first-round draft choice, was recalled from Triple-A for the third time this season. He hit .195 with two homers and 10 RBIs for the Pirates. In Indianapolis, he hit .261 with eight homers and 28 RBIs.
Rios spent parts of the past three seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies, compiling an overall 4-2 record with a 6.38 ERA and 1.655 WHIP.
Wang, who also has pitched briefly for the Milwaukee Brewers, was 1-0 with a 3.33 ERA and 1.222 WHIP for Oakland this season.
