The Pittsburgh Pirates’ Ke’Bryan Hayes, who added a .271 batting average to his slick glove work this season, was named Thursday the Fielding Bible’s Defensive Player of the Year while also earning the Fielding Bible Award among third basemen.

The distinction marks the second time in three seasons (also 2021) he has earned Fielding Bible honors.

Hayes, 26, led all MLB third basemen with 21 Defensive Runs Saved, according to the Fielding Bible. The next closest player was Colorado’s Ryan McMahon with 17.

Also a finalist for a Rawlings Gold Glove Award, Hayes ranked fourth in Defensive Runs Saved regardless of position, according to the 2023 Fielding Bible, trailing only Daulton Varsho (29), Fernando Tatis Jr. (27) and Andres Gimenez (23).

Since his rookie season of 2020, Hayes ranks first among all MLB third basemen with 65 Defensive Runs Saved, according to the Fielding Bible, well ahead of runner-up Ryan McMahon with 43.
