The Penn State men’s soccer team downed Massachusetts, 4-1, to advance to the third round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday.

The Lions (9-1-2) are among the final 16 teams remaining in the 36-team tournament after their win over the Minutemen (7-2-3) in Greensboro, N.C.

Freshman Peter Mangione had three assists, while sophomore Alex Stevenson, junior Seth Kuhn and freshman Tyger Evans all scored in the game.

Unseeded Penn State will face No. 8-seed Georgetown, which scored a 2-0 win over High Point in the second round, on Thursday in Cary, N.C., in the third round.

Penn State got out to an early lead on UMass after a cross from redshirt senior Pierre Reedy deflected off a Minutemen defender and past the goalkeeper to give the Lions the 1-0 lead.

Stevenson and Kuhn later scored off assists from Mangione to help Penn State build a 3-0 lead on UMass entering halftime.

The Minutemen, though, came out strong after halftime and put consistent pressure on the Lions defense. Eventually, a UMass cross deflected off a Penn State body in the box and got past goalkeeper Kris Shakes in the 53rd minute to make it a 3-1 game.

Shakes, though, held strong — UMass outshot Penn State, 11-4, in the second half — and Evans eventually put the game out of reach for good in the 82nd minute with his second goal of the year.

Shakes made seven saves on the afternoon as UMass finished the game with a 14-9 shots advantage, including a 7-4 advantage with shots on goal.

Penn State will face Georgetown on Thursday at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary.
