Jim Ferry’s Penn State head coaching debut scheduled for Wednesday against Drexel has been postponed.

The season opener for the Penn State men’s basketball team has been postponed because of coronavirus protocols, the school announced Tuesday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions were scheduled to face Drexel at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Bryce Jordan Center in State College.

The cancellation is one of at least nine scheduled games called off because of covid concerns on the opening day of college basketball season.

In its most recent report on coronavirus testing in the athletic program, which was released Nov. 18, Penn State said it recorded six positive results out of 1,558 tests from Nov. 6-13.

The game was set to be the Penn State head coaching debut for former Duquesne coach Jim Ferry, who took over on an interim basis when Pat Chambers resigned after a misconduct investigation last month.

The Nittany Lions are coming off one of the best seasons in recent program history. They were 21-10 when the pandemic ended last season.

Drexel is coming off a 13-19 season. According to a report from CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein, Drexel’s game with Pitt at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Petersen Events Center is on as scheduled.
