Penn State guard Izaiah Brockington prepares to shoot against Maryland on March 7, 2021, in College Park, Md.

STATE COLLEGE — Penn State men’s basketball guard Izaiah Brockington announced he’ll remain with the Lions after entering the transfer portal earlier this month.

On Thursday night, new Penn State coach Micah Shrewsberry said he told the roster inherited, one that features a half-dozen players in the transfer portal, that he wants all of them back. And Friday afternoon, a social media post from Brockington represented the first domino to fall.

“After much thought and careful consideration, I’ve decided to stay home by committing to play for Coach Micah Shrewsberry while also testing the NBA draft process for feedback on my game,” Brockington wrote on social media.

“Following my meeting with Coach Shrewsberry, I really believe in the vision he has for this program and feel like we can do something special.

“I would like to express my sincere gratitude and thanks to the Big 12, Big East, ACC, SEC, A10 and AAC schools that recruited me while I was in the transfer portal. At my core, I feel like I’m a B1G player and Penn State is where I’m supposed to be.”

Brockington’s return represents Shrewsberry’s first win on the recruiting trail as the Lions coach. Brockington averaged 12.6 points and 4.9 rebounds per game in 25 games (24 starts) last season.

The junior from Archbishop Ryan in Philadelphia joined the Lions under former coach Patrick Chambers in 2018-19 as a transfer from St. Bonaventure. He sat out that season under transfer rules, but he joined the rotation in 2019-20 to average 8.1 points in 20.8 minutes per game off the bench in 31 games.

Brockington entered the transfer portal earlier this month following the announcement of Shrewsberry’s hiring. The Lions went 11-14 and won one game in the Big Ten tournament under interim coach Jim Ferry.

Brockington’s return leaves five players in the transfer portal: guard Myreon Jones, forward Seth Lundy, forward John Harrar, guard Jamari Wheeler and forward Trent Buttrick.

“I told them all, I want them all back,” Shrewsberry said Thursday night during an appearance on the Penn State Coaches Show. “I want every single one of you guys back because I know how talented they were.”

There’s still work to do for Shrewsberry in taking over the Lions, but Brockington’s return is a significant first step.
