Pittsburgh Public Schools students, staff to get free Penguins tickets through new mentoring program
The Pittsburgh Penguins are partnering with Pittsburgh Public Schools to provide free tickets to students, teachers and staff at elementary and middle schools to attend regular season home games.
The PPS All-Stars initiative, announced Tuesday, is a new mentoring program that also includes career path development sessions for students. The sessions will be led by Penguins players, front office executives and staff.
“The future of our city depends on investing in our young people, in particular our children at Pittsburgh Public Schools,” Penguins President of Business Operations Kevin Acklin said in a statement.
“They represent our future leaders, CEOs, players and fans,” Acklin added. “The Penguins are excited to bring them to PPG Paints Arena and help mentor the life skills that are core to performing academically and athletically at the highest levels.”
The new program is part of the Penguins’ efforts to connect with the city’s public schools. Starting last year, the Penguins began offering free learn-to-skate and diversity hockey programs at the Hunt Armory community rink in Shadyside.
The Hunt Armory, which opened in 2021 in a partnership involving the city and the Penguins, was the first public ice rink to be built in the city in nearly 25 years. The Penguins run operations at the armory, and recently practiced at the facility.
Pittsburgh Public Schools Superintendent Wayne Walters praised the PPS All-Stars initiative and said the Penguins continue to be a valuable partner with the district.
“Through the generous gift of PPS All-Stars, they are removing barriers that in the past prevented access to Penguins games and, more importantly, exposure to the sport of hockey,” Walters said.
The PPS All-Stars program and free ticket availability starts on Dec. 12 for the team’s home game against the Dallas Stars. Eligible PPS students and staff will also receive vouchers for a free food item and drink for games, in partnership with Aramark.
Mentoring and career development sessions will begin in 2023 and be hosted at PPG Paints Arena and PPS schools. Eligible participants can learn more at the Pittsburgh Penguins’ website.
