Penguins to start Matt Murray against Red Wings
The Penguins will start goaltender Matt Murray on Sunday against the Detroit Red Wings at PPG Paints Arena, according to coach Mike Sullivan.
In 30 games this season, Murray has a 16-7-5 record, along with a 2.82 goals-against average, a .902 save percentage and one shutout.
Murray and Tristan Jarry have been platooning the position for the better part of two months.
“It’s a competitive advantage that our team has,” Sullivan said. “Most teams don’t have that luxury. We feel as though we’ve got two really good goalies, two No. 1 goalies, that we can put in the net that are going to give us a chance to win. Both of these guys are playing extremely well. You look at the schedule that we have coming up here, we have a lot of games in a short period of time. That’s when that luxury to have — in our minds — No. 1 goaltenders really plays itself out. That’s when it’s significant. There’s a healthy competition between the two. It helps them be at their best. These guys have done a great job for us.”
Notes:
• Injured forwards Nick Bjugstad (core muscle) and Dominik Kahun (concussion) skated in the morning, according to Sullivan.
• The Red Wings are expected to start goaltender Jimmy Howard. In 25 games this season, he has a 2-21-2 record along with a 3.98 goals against average and an .889 save percentage.
• Former Penguins defenseman Trevor Daley is expected to miss the game because of an undisclosed injury.
