Pittsburgh Penguins
In seven games this season, Penguins goaltender Tristan Jarry has a 2-4-1 record.

Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Tristan Jarry is scheduled to do something Sunday he never has done.

Play the Washington Capitals.

Coach Mike Sullivan announced Jarry will be in net for Sunday’s home game at PPG Paints Arena against their long-time rivals.

It will be Jarry’s first career game against the Capitals. The only other active opposing NHL teams Jarry never has played are the Chicago Blackhawks and Dallas Stars.

This season, Jarry has appeared in seven games and has a 2-4-1 record along with a 3.95 goals against average and an .857 save percentage.

Expected to take over as the franchise’s top goaltender this season, Jarry largely has struggled and as a result, the team has platooned him with backup Casey DeSmith.

In six games this season, DeSmith has fared much better than Jarry. DeSmith has a 4-1-0 record along with a 2.84 goals-against average and an .885 save percentage.

“We have Tristan and Casey that we knew are both capable guys,” Sullivan said via video conference. “They’ve had their ups and downs through this early part of the season. We’re trying to help them through that process. At the same time, we’re trying to make the best decisions for the team to help us win games.”

Notes:

• Sullivan said defenseman Marcus Pettersson will not play. On injured reserve because of an undisclosed ailment, Pettersson practiced Saturday in a full capacity with contact. He has missed the past eight games.

In four games this season, Pettersson has one goal.

• Because of covid-19 issues throughout the league, the Capitals will be playing their first game in a week. Their last contest was a 7-4 home loss to the Philadelphia Flyers on Feb. 7.

• The Capitals are slated to start rookie goaltender Vitek Vanecek. In 10 games this season, Vanecek has a 10-5-2 record along with a 3.18 goals-against average and a .903 save percentage.

Follow the Penguins all season long.
