Penguins to start goaltender Matt Murray in Game 2
The Penguins are scheduled to start goaltender Matt Murray for Game 2 of their qualifying round series against the Montreal Canadiens at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto on Monday according to coach Mike Sullivan.
During Game 1 on Saturday, Murray made 32 saves on 35 shots in a 3-2 overtime loss.
Appearing in 38 games during the regular season, Murray had a 20-11-5 record along with a 2.87 goals against average, a .899 save percentage and one shutout.
Sullivan declined to discuss any potential lineup changes Sunday.
The Canadiens are expected to start Carey Price in net. He made 39 saves on 41 shots during Game 1.
During the regular season, Price appeared in 58 games and had a 27-25-6 record, a 2.79 goals against average, a .909 save percentage and four shutouts.
Notes:
• There were 11 penalties called during Game 1, including two which led to penalty shots. The Canadiens recorded eight of the infractions while the Penguins were penalized three times.
Three of Montreal’s penalties were for hooking. In contrast, the Penguins did not incur a stick-related infraction.
Elsewhere in the NHL, a handful of postseason games saw a number of stick-related penalties.
“There seems to be a fair amount of penalties being called throughout the course of the playoffs to this point,” Sullivan said via video conference from Toronto. “So I thought our team did a pretty good job in Game 1 being responsible with their sticks. It’s something that we always talk about with our team, just our stick discipline. But certainly, it’s something that we’ll continue to discuss here. It just seems like that’s been the case to this point. But it’s still early.”
• Penguins forward Patrick Marleau logged 11:15 of ice time in Game 1, the least of any player on either team. All of that was recorded in five-on-five time as Marleau did not participate on the power play or penalty kill during a contest filled with special teams deployment.
Sullivan denied any suggestion he was limiting Marleau’s ice time intentionally.
“I’m not trying to be careful with the way I use Patrick Marleau,” Sullivan said. “He’s a (heck) of a player. It was more about how the game played out and the amount of special teams that took place.”
