Penguins to start goaltender Casey DeSmith against Bruins

The Penguins are scheduled to start goaltender Casey DeSmith for Tuesday’s home game against the Boston Bruins at PPG Paints Arena.

In nine games this season, DeSmith has a 6-2-0 record along with a 2.23 goals against average, a .912 save percentage and one shutout.

His last start came in a 3-0 road win against the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday. He made 24 saves to record the Penguins’ lone shutout of the season.

Notes:

• The Penguins could see injured defenseman John Marino and forward Jared McCann return to the lineup. According to a team spokesperson, both players are labeled as a “game-time decision.” Both players skated this morning.

Marino has missed the past three games due to an undisclosed ailment. In 25 games this season, Marino has four points (one goal, three assists).

McCann has been been sidelined for the past four games due to an undisclosed ailment. In 17 games this season, McCann has 10 points (five goals, five assists).

• Defenseman Mark Friedman also skated this morning but will miss his sixth consecutive game due to an undisclosed injury. In two games, this season, he has two points (one goal, one assist).

Friedman, McCann and forward Jason Zucker (undisclosed) all remain on injured reserve as of Tuesday morning.

• The Penguins enter the contest with a season-best six-game winning streak.

• The Bruins are scheduled to start goaltender Dan Vladar. This will be his first career start in the NHL. In five American Hockey League (AHL) games with the Providence Bruins this season, Vladar has a 2-2-1 record along with a 2.01 goals against average, a .923 save percentage and one shutout.
