Penguins sign goaltender Filip Larsson to 2-year contract
The Pittsburgh Penguins signed goaltender Filip Larsson to a two-year, two-way contract that carries an NHL salary cap hit of $775,000 on Monday.
Larsson, 25, spent the 2023-24 season with Leksands IF of the Swedish Hockey League (SHL), that country’s top league. Appearing in 28 SHL games, Larsson had a 19-9-0 record, 1.93 goals-against average, .920 save percentage and a league-best five shutouts.
During the previous three seasons, the Swedish-born Larsson (6-foot-2, 194 pounds) primarily played in Sweden’s second-tier league, the Allsvensken, with three teams.
A sixth-round pick (No. 167 overall) of the Detroit Red Wings in 2016, the left-catching Larsson spent one professional season in North America, splitting the pandemic-shortened 2019-20 season between the Red Wings’ American Hockey League and ECHL affiliates.
With Grand Rapids of the AHL, Larsson appeared in seven games and posted a 2-5-0 record along with a 4.01 GAA and a .843 save percentage. As a member of the ECHL’s Toledo Walleyes, Larsson played in 10 contests and had 4-6-0 record, a 2.72 GAA and a .910 save percentage.
After the 2021-22 season, the Red Wings did not extend a qualifying offer to Larsson, allowing him to become an unrestricted free agent with regards to his NHL status.
Before turning professional, Larsson played at the NCAA level with Denver during the 2018-19 season.
