The Pittsburgh Penguins recalled goaltender Magnus Hellberg from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League (AHL).

Hellberg was initially summoned to the NHL roster Sunday under emergency conditions. On Monday, coach Mike Sullivan explained one of his team’s incumbent goaltenders — he did not identify which one — was not feeling well. That led to Hellberg being recalled as a precaution.

As it was, starter Tristan Jarry and backup Alex Nedeljkovic each dressed for Sunday’s 2-1 home loss to the Los Angeles Kings.

By Monday, Hellberg was still present with the team and worked out with injured forwards Noel Acciari and Matt Nieto at the team’s facility in Cranberry.

Jarry and Nedeljkovic each participated in the formal practice session without any evident maladies.

The team did not formally announce the transaction until Monday afternoon.

This marks the second time this season Hellberg has been recalled to the NHL roster with the previous transaction occurring in October.

In three NHL games this season, Hellberg has a 1-0-0 record, a 2.50 goals against average and a .922 save percentage.

At the AHL level, Hellberg had appeared in 17 NHL games and has an 8-7-2 record, a 3.03 goals against average and a .901 save percentage.

A free agent addition this past offseason, Hellberg is signed to a one-year contract worth $785,000.
