Penguins recall forward Sam Poulin from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton

In 36 games with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins this season, forward Sam Poulin has 27 points (13 goals, 14 assists).

The Pittsburgh Penguins recalled rookie forward Sam Poulin from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League on Friday morning in advance of a crucial road game against the rival Washington Capitals.

This marks the second time this season Poulin has been recalled to the NHL roster. He was previously summoned on March 26 before being assigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Tuesday.

Primarily deployed as a fourth-line center, the left-handed Poulin has appeared in three NHL games this season and has no points while averaging 7:47 of ice time per contest.

With Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, the 23-year-old Poulin has played in 36 games and has 27 points (13 goals, 14 assists).

A first-round pick (No. 21 overall) in 2019, Poulin (6-foot-2, 213 pounds) is in the final year of a three-year entry-level contract with a salary cap hit of $863,333.

Entering Friday, the Penguins (34-20-11, 79 points) are three points behind the Capitals (36-28-10, 82 points), who occupy the final wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. ‘

Yoder stays at Providence

In 35 games with Providence College this season, forward Chase Yoder had 20 points (11 goals, nine assists).

Penguins forward prospect Chase Yoder will return to Providence College for a fifth season in 2024-25.

That school announced Yoder’s decision on Thursday.

Barring any change of plans, the Penguins could Yoder’s NHL rights as a result of his return to Providence. Per Cap Friendly, the estimated deadline for the Penguins to sign Yoder before losing his NHL rights is Aug. 15, though some details as to that must still be sorted out.

A native of Texas, Yoder was a sixth-round pick (No. 160 overall) in 2020.

Serving as Providence’s captain this season, Yoder appeared in 35 games and led that team in goals (11) while posting 20 points overall.

In 2020, the NCAA granted an extra year of eligibility to student athletes for fall and winter sports whose 2020-21 seasons - which was Yoder’s first with Providence - were impacted as a result of the pandemic.
