The Pittsburgh Penguins placed defenseman Brian Dumoulin on long-term injured reserve.

That designation allowed them to recall defenseman Will Reilly, a first-year professional, from their taxi squad.

Dumoulin, one of the team’s top players, has been sidelined the past two games — since a 3-2 overtime road loss to the Boston Bruins on Tuesday — because of an undisclosed injury. During the late stages of the second period in that contest, Dumoulin fell awkwardly to the ice and had trouble recovering to his skates.

In seven games this season, Dumoulin has one assist.

He is one of six Penguins defensemen who are hobbled because of injury along with Kris Letang, Mike Matheson, Marcus Pettersson, Juuso Riikola and Zach Trotman. All but Letang are on injured reserve.

Dumoulin and Pettersson as well as forwards Zach Aston-Reese and Evan Rodrigues are on long-term injured reserve.

Players on long-term injured reserve must miss a minimum of of 10 NHL games and 24 days in the NHL season.

Reilly, 23, was the last pick (No. 217th overall) in the seventh round of the 2017 draft. On April 15, 2020, he was signed to a two-year entry-level contract.

The 6-foot-2, 197-pound defenseman has yet to play a professional game at any level. Last season, in 34 NCAA games with Rensselaer Polytechnical Institute, the right-handed Reilly had 22 points (eight goals, 14 assists).
