Penguins notebook: Team holds 1st scrimmage of camp
The third day of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ training camp at PPG Paints Arena saw them stage their first scrimmage, complete with all available players.
Tristan Jarry was in net for “team yellow” — unofficially dubbed that for the color of the squad’s jerseys — and led that unit to a 3-0 win against “team black.”
Forwards Jason Zucker, Colton Sceviour and Bryan Rust scored the scrimmage’s only goals.
Backup goaltender Casey DeSmith allowed all three goals.
Back from baby break
Sceviour joined his teammates after being excused from practice Monday to attend to his wife as she gave birth. Upon the start of Tuesday’s practice, his teammates appeared to “clap” their sticks on the ice to celebrate the new arrival.
Working on the left wing of the fourth line with Teddy Blueger at center and Brandon Tanev on the right wing, Sceviour scored the scrimmage’s second goal off a slick backhand feed by Blueger in the crease.
The 31-year-old Sceviour was acquired Sept. 24 in a trade with the Florida Panthers. A nine-year veteran who also has played with the Dallas Stars, Sceviour appeared in 69 games last season with Florida and put up 16 points (six goals, 10 assists).
Capable of playing either wing, Sceviour, a right-handed shot, has dabbled at center as well.
“Colton is, I think, a real good role player,” coach Mike Sullivan said via video conference with media Tuesday. “He’s a guy that’s been a good player. He’s hard to play against. He’s got a good sound defensive conscience. He skates well, he’s strong on pucks … He’s one of those guys that has a lot of experience in the league, and I think that will help us. I refer to those type of guys as ‘glue guys.’ They’re important players as far as a team becoming a team in a true sense of the word.”
ZAR sits again
Forwards Zach Aston-Reese and Kasperi Kapanen were the only players who did not participate in practice. Aston-Reese remains sidelined as he recovers from offseason surgery on his left shoulder. Kapanen, a native of Finland, still is trying to square away his immigration status in order to enter the United States.
Up for bids
The NHL, in the pursuit of finding new revenue sources while all arenas remain mostly empty because of the coronavirus pandemic, announced sponsors for all four of its divisions for this season.
MassMutual will sponsor the East Division, which includes the Penguins. Discover claimed the Central Division, and Honda has the West Division. Scotiabank, a Canadian financial institution, has the North Division, which is composed of all that country’s franchises.
