Sidney Crosby will play postseason hockey, after all.
On Sunday, Hockey Canada announced via social media that the Pittsburgh Penguins forward was added to that country’s roster for the upcoming International Ice Hockey Federation’s (IIHF) World Championship tournament.
This past regular season, Crosby, 37, led the Penguins with 91 points (33 goals, 58 assists) in 80 games.
Crosby, a native of Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia, has an extensive history of playing for Canada internationally. In February, he served as captain and led Canada to victory in the NHL’s 4 Nations Face-Off exhibition tournament. During event, Crosby had five points (one goal, four assists) in four games.
His most recent appearance in an IIHF World Championship came in 2015. Helping Canada win gold, Crosby appeared in nine games and scored 11 points (four goals, seven assists).
The upcoming IIHF World Championship tournament will be staged primarily in Stockholm between May 9 and 25. Herning, Denmark, will also host games.
Penguins president of hockey operations Kyle Dubas is serving as general manager for Canada in this tournament.
Assistant coach Mike Vellucci will inhabit the same role with the United States’ squad. Reserve forward Joona Koppanen skated for Finland in the Euro Hockey Tour event this weekend and could be selected for that country’s roster in the IIHF World Championship tournament.
