Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin was scratched from Tuesday’s game at PPG Paints Arena against the Toronto Maple Leafs due to an unspecified illness according to the team’s Twitter account.
Malkin participated in warmups but left relatively quickly.
With Malkin absent, the Penguins opened the contest having Jared McCann center the second line in Malkin’s place. Dominik Kahun, sidelined for the past eight games due to a concussion, returned to the left wing on the second line.
Rookie forward Anthony Angello, a healthy scratch for three games, replaced Malkin the lineup. He manned the fourth line.
Malkin has appeared in 44 games this season and has scored a team-leading 58 points (18 goals, 40 assists).
