Penguins captain Sidney Crosby will need three to four weeks for recovery following surgery on a wrist.

Penguins captain Sidney Crosby underwent arthroscopic wrist surgery on Monday.

The procedure was described as arthroscopic wrist debridement surgery according to a release the team issued on Tuesday.

Recovery time will be three to four weeks. NHL training camps for the 2020-21 season are aiming to open in mid-November.

Which specific wrist Crosby had operated on was not identified. Crosby suffered a right wrist injury in 2014 which required injections.

He is the third member of the Penguins to undergo a surgical procedure — at least one announced by the team — since their season came to an end in early August. Forwards Evgeni Malkin (elbow) and Zach Aston-Reese (shoulder) also had ailment operated on. Forwards Nick Bjugstad (back) and Dominik Simon (shoulder) underwent surgeries in the spring.

A core muscle injury limited Crosby to 41 games and 47 points (16 goals, 31 assist) during the 2019-20 regular season, which was cut short in March because of the coronavirus pandemic.

During the postseason, Crosby led the team with three points (two goals, one assist) in four games.

Crosby, 33, is scheduled to enter the eighth year of a 12-year contract with a salary cap hit of $8.7 million at the dawn of the 2020-21 campaign.

Malkin underwent surgery on his left elbow and is expected to take three to four weeks to recover. Aston-Reese’s recovery from shoulder surgery is expected to be six months.

Last week, general manager Jim Rutherford said Bjugstad and Simon are progressing as scheduled. Neither player was available for the team’s postseason because of their ailments.

Follow the Penguins all season long.
