The Pittsburgh Penguins hired Chris Butler as a player development coach, Greg Pateryn as a professional scout and Garrett Peters as a global crossover scout, general manager Ron Hextall announced Monday.

Butler, 35, spent last season as an amateur scout with the Arizona Coyotes. He will work with hockey operations advisor Trevor Daley to help develop the defensive prospects in the organization.

Butler had an 11-year NHL career as a defenseman, playing 407 NHL games with the St. Louis Blues, Calgary Flames and Buffalo Sabres, accumulating 86 points.

Pateryn, 32, is a professional scout based out of California, and will primarily scout Western Conference teams. He recently concluded a 10-year pro career as a defenseman. He spent last season with the Anaheim Ducks and their AHL affiliate, San Diego, where he served as captain.

Peters, 35, will scout amateur players in North America and Europe. Peters was an amateur scout for five seasons with the St. Louis Blues, where he won the Stanley Cup in 2019 as a member of the hockey operations department, and served as a scout for the Halifax Mooseheads of the QMJHL from 2014-17.

He played four seasons of junior hockey with the Halifax Mooseheads and Drummondville Voltigeurs the QMJHL from 2005-08, before playing parts of four seasons in various professional leagues including the ECHL, SPHL and FHL.

The Penguins also added an assistant coach to their AHL staff in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, hiring Sheldon Brookbank, a 41-year-old former NHL defenseman who spent parts of the last four seasons as an assistant coach with the Chicago Blackhawks.

The additions come after Penguins director of player development Scott Young took a job as director of player personnel in Vancouver and head of pro scouting Ryan Bowness accepted an assistant general manager post in Ottawa this offseason.

The Penguins also announced four front-office promotions Monday, naming Tracey McCants Lewis chief people officer and general counsel, Jennifer Bullano Ridgley senior vice president of communications, Ross Miller senior vice president of partnership marketing and Jack Tipton senior vice president of partnership sales.

McCants Lewis, a Monroeville native, is responsible for all Penguins legal affairs and is involved in the development of the Civic Arena site. Bullano Ridgley, a New Castle native, is the first female vice president in team history.
