The Penguins activated forward Brock McGinn from injured reserve on Tuesday afternoon in advance of their road game against the New York Islanders at UBS Arena in Elmont, N.Y.
McGinn has been sidelined the past 15 games due to a suspected right hand or arm injury.
Appearing in 56 games this season, McGinn has scored 18 points (11 goals, seven assists) while averaging 15:02 of ice time per contest, including 1:59 in short-handed situations.
Notes:
• A regulation win would clinch a playoff berth for the Penguins and extend their streak of postseason appearances to 16 years.
• The Penguins are expected to start goaltender Casey DeSmith in net. Penguins coach Mike Sullivan announced DeSmith’s status to media in Elmont after Tuesday’s morning skate.
In 20 games this season, DeSmith has an 8-4-4 record, a 2.89 goals against average, a .907 save percentage and two shutouts.
After claiming a victory in a 3-2 overtime home win against the Nashville Predators on Sunday, Tuesday’s contest will mark the second time this season DeSmith has started in consecutive games. He was in net for an 8-5 home win against the San Jose Sharks on Jan. 2 then started (but did not complete) a 5-3 home win against the St. Louis Blues on Jan. 5.
DeSmith has appeared in six games against the Islanders over his career and has a 3-1-0 record, a 2.12 goals against average and a .924 save percentage.
• The Islanders are slated to start goaltender Ilya Sorokin. In 44 games this season, Sorokin has a 23-14-7 record, a 2.27 goals against average, a .927 save percentage and six shutouts.
Follow the Penguins all season long.
