Pittsburgh Penguins radio play-by-play broadcaster Josh Getzoff (left) and color commentator Phil Bourque call a game last season at PPG Paints Arena. Because of covid-19 protocols, Getzoff and Bourque were forced to miss Game 4 of the Penguins’ first-round series against the New York Rangers.

Paul Steigerwald and Colby Armstrong will handle the local radio call Monday night for the Pittsburgh Penguins’ playoff game against the New York Rangers. The Penguins’ radio network’s regular team of Josh Getzoff and Phil Bourque are unavailable because of NHL covid-19 protocol.

The team made the announcement of the situation via a message posted to its verified Twitter account. Penguins covid policy has long been to decline to confirm if an individual in protocol has tested positive for the virus.

Longtime Penguins fans remember Steigerwald as a voice of team broadcasts for 32 years, first as a color commentator alongside Hall of Fame play-by-play voice Mike Lange in a television/radio simulcast, later as the radio play-by-play voice and finally calling play-by-play on TV until he was replaced by Steve Mears in that role in 2017.

Steigerwald has worked for the Penguins in some capacity since the early 1980s. Part of his current role is hosting pre- and postgame shows on radio.

Armstrong is broadcasting for a variety of local and leaguewide outlets, including a part-time role on the Penguins’ radio network in addition to some work for the Penguins’ local television broadcaster, AT&T Sports Net. A first-round pick of the Penguins in 2001, Armstrong played 2 ½ seasons for them and five other NHL seasons for three other teams.

Getzoff formally took over the fulltime radio play-by-play role at the beginning of this season after the official retirement announcement from Lange. But Getzoff had gradually been taking over for Lange over the prior four years, including last season when he broadcast all but one of the Penguins’ regular-season games.

Bourque missed the Jan. 20 game this season out of an abundance of caution related to covid concerns; Armstrong filled in then, too. A non-covid illness forced Getzoff to leave the booth early during a March 27 game.

Bourque has been the Penguins’ color commentator since the early 2000s.

Keep up with the Pittsburgh Penguins all season long.
