Irwin’s Calahan Young is part of the 240-member U.S. Paralympic team that will compete in Tokyo later this month.

The U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee announced team rosters Wednesday.

Young will compete in goalball for the American side in the Paralympics, which begin Aug. 25.

The games were postponed in 2020 because of the pandemic.

Six of the 240 members of Team USA are guides for impaired athletes.

Young, a 2013 Norwin graduate, is legally blind due to retinitis pigmentosa. He walks with a cane.

He played baseball, basketball and football in high school before his vision began to deteriorate.

The Paralympics feature 22 sports, including wheelchair basketball, track and field, swimming and women’s sitting volleyball. Newcomers are badminton and Taekwondo.

The medal matches for goalball are Sept. 3.

Young, who is 6-foot-5, is known as an explosive scorer. He had 15 goals at the 2019 Parapan Games when the U.S. team secured a berth to Tokyo.

“At its core, the Paralympic Games represent inclusivity and the infinite possibility of sport,” said Sarah Hirshland, CEO of the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee. “This group of athletes represents Team USA at their best. They are strong, resilient and ready to make you proud.”

Other area competitors include Eric McElvenny of Pittsburgh (paratriathlon) and Kevin Polish (Carmichaels).
