Henry Davis, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft, takes batting practice at PNC Park after signing with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Davis is one of 28 non-roster invitees to spring training.

First-round picks Henry Davis, Nick Gonzales and Quinn Priester are among the 28 non-roster players invited by the Pittsburgh Pirates to their major league spring training camp.

Davis, the No. 1 overall selection in the 2021 MLB Draft, is one of six catchers invited to camp as the Pirates search for a backup to Roberto Perez. Henry Davis will be joined by veterans Taylor Davis, Michael Perez and Jamie Ritchie and prospects Carter Bins, who was acquired from Seattle in the Tyler Anderson trade last July, and Endy Rodriguez.

Gonzales, a second baseman selected No. 7 in 2020, headlines a group of infielders that includes Ji-hwan Bae, Mason Martin, Hunter Owen and Jared Triolo.

Priester, a 21-year-old right-hander picked 18th in 2019, is the top non-roster pitching prospect.

The pitching group includes righties Cody Bolton, Mike Burrows, Yerry De Los Santos, Jerad Eickhoff, Adrian Florencio, Enmanuel Mejia, Carmen Mlodzinski, Kyle Nicolas, Hunter Stratton, Beau Sulser and Tanhaj Thomas and left-handers Cam Alldred and Blake Weiman.

Mejia was the organization’s Kent Tekulve award winner as minor league reliever of the year, and Florencio won the Bob Friend award as minor league pitcher of the year. Nicolas was acquired from the Miami Marlins in the Jacob Stallings trade.

Matt Fraizer led all Pirates minor leaguers by batting .306 with a .388 OBP, .552 slugging percentage and .939 OPS, with 133 hits and 84 runs scored between High-A Greensboro and Double-A Altoona to win the Honus Wagner award as minor league player of the year. Fraizer headlines an outfield group that includes Bligh Madris and Cal Mitchell.
