The NHL and NHLPA announced on Tuesday a new target date of Jan. 1 to open the 2020-21 season.

Previously, the NHL had identified Dec. 1.

The NHL calendar has been impacted dramatically ever since the NHL halted play March 12 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

After the remainder of the 2019-20 season was delayed and ultimately canceled, the NHL orchestrated a postseason tournament throughout August and September in Toronto and Edmonton in order to complete the season.

The Tampa Bay Lightning defeated the Dallas Stars for the Stanley Cup in a championship series that concluded on Sept. 28.

Typically, NHL training camps open in mid-September while the regular season opens in early October.

There was no official word on when training camps may open for the 2020-21 season but on Saturday, during a video conference with local media, Penguins goaltender Tristan Jarry said players have been told to prepare to open camp on Nov. 15.
