NFL awards Steelers compensatory pick in 4th-round of draft

Anticipation was that the Pittsburgh Steelers might be awarded two compensatory draft picks this year based on free-agent losses in the 2020 offseason.

Instead, they got just one.

When the NFL released the compensatory picks list Wednesday, the Steelers were awarded a pick in the fourth round, the 35th pick of the round and the No. 140 overall selection. There was sentiment the Steelers also might get a pick in the sixth round, but that did not happen based on the NFL’s comp pick formula.

The formula is based on the number of players gained and lost in free agency. The Steelers lost Javon Hargrave, B.J. Finney, Sean Davis, Tyler Matakevich and Nick Vannett, and they added Eric Ebron and Derek Watt.

The additional pick gives the Steelers eight in the draft, which will be April 29-May 1. Two of those picks will be in the fourth round.

Since compensatory draft picks were introduced in 1994, the Steelers have been awarded 34 such selections. Only seven teams have been awarded more comp picks, led by the Baltimore Ravens with 53.

The NFL also released values for fifth-year player options for 2022, with teams having to make decisions on whether to exercise those options by May 3. The option value for safety Minkah Fitzpatrick is $10.612 million, and it is $6.753 million for safety Terrell Edmunds. Fitzpatrick’s value is higher because he has been selected to two Pro Bowls, a performance clause that is part of the option formula.
