Minor league report: Penguins, Jonathan Gruden beat Checkers

A goal and an assist by forward Jonathan Gruden led the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins to a 3-2 win against the Charlotte Checkers at Bojangles Coliseum in Charlotte, N.C. on Saturday.

Forwards Corey Andonovski and Vasily Ponomarev each scored goals for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (24-11-4-0) while goaltender Sergei Murashov made 29 saves on 31 shots, keeping his American Hockey League record perfect at 5-0-0.

The Penguins’ next game is a home contest against the Bridgeport Islanders on Friday, 7:05 p.m.


Forward Matthew Querica scored two goals for the Wheeling Nailers in a 5-3 loss to the Fort Wayne Komets at Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, Ind.

Goaltender Jaxon Castor made 23 saves on 27 shots as his record slipped to 3-3-1 while forward David Jankowski recorded three assists for Wheeling (28-11-2-0).

Highlights:

The Nailers’ next game is a road contest against the Toledo Walleye on Sunday, 5:15 p.m.
