Steelers linebacker Marcus Allen works on the side as the team returns to the UPMC Rooney Sports Performance Complex Saturday, Aug. 6, 2022. After torrential rains canceled the night practice at Memorial Stadium on Friday night in Latrobe.

If fans were hoping Mike Tomlin would criticize Marcus Allen at his weekly news conference Tuesday, they came away disappointed.

Tomlin declined to discuss specifics about Allen’s unsportsmanlike conduct penalty between the third and fourth quarters Sunday in the Steelers’ 24-16 win at Carolina. He also wouldn’t talk about personal fouls calls against wide receiver Diontae Johnson and safety Miles Killebrew in the game.

“I’ll leave that in-house,” Tomlin said. “I’m not gonna give you the pound of flesh you’re looking for.”

Allen, the fourth-year special teams player from Penn State, was roasted for his decision to enter the Panthers huddle during the break between the third and fourth quarters.

The Panthers were preparing to punt while facing a fourth-and-27. Thanks to Allen’s gaffe, which drew a flag for 15 yards, the Panthers were given a first-and-10 that led to a field goal, cutting their deficit to 21-10.

Tomlin doesn’t think the Steelers have a discipline problem, although he acknowledged what transpired Sunday was “not good.”

“Largely, I do feel good about the overall discipline of us, certainly,” he said.

Injury report

Strong safety Terrell Edmunds is dealing with a hamstring issue that, Tomlin said, “could slow him at the early portions of the week.” Wide receiver Diontae Johnson (turf toe) and fullback Derek Watt (ankle) also could be limited in practice.

Inside linebacker Myles Jack did not play against Carolina because of a groin injury.

“I don’t anticipate it negatively affecting his availability at the end of the week,” Tomlin said.
