Matt Canada: 'Nothing has changed at all' in role working with Steelers QB Kenny Pickett
If Matt Canada has taken on a new role to work more closely with quarterback Kenny Pickett, it is news to the Pittsburgh Steelers’ third-year offensive coordinator.
Canada said Thursday that there has been no change his role in overseeing Pickett’s development this season.
“Nothing at all,” he said. “I’m the coordinator. I work with him out there. (Quarterback coach Mike Sullivan) and I do, I think, a really good job. If I talk to him on the field. I quickly tell Sully what I said. When we have a meeting, we want to do a great job of having one voice.
“Nothing has changed at all.”
A report surfaced Sunday that claimed Canada would be moving to a “more prominent role” working with Pickett, who is in his second NFL season and first full year as the Steelers’ starting quarterback. It stated that Canada would continue calling the offensive plays but also would work more directly with Pickett “on a daily basis,” which, theoretically, would limit Sullivan’s responsibilities.
Coach Mike Tomlin on Tuesday also said nothing was different about Canada’s role. Canada confirmed that as well.
“Kenny and I have known each other and have a great relationship,” he said. “Sully and I have a great relationship. All we’re trying to do is find a way to be more efficient. It’s all we do every week.”
Tomlin said that in their second season working together, Canada and Pickett have developed a chemistry that has grown “in a very natural way. Whether it’s week in or week out this season, whether it’s the totality of the two years that Kenny has been here.”
