Looking to challenge himself, Franklin Regional grad Kadyn Hannah transfers to Cal (Pa.)
The challenge, not the change of scenery, is what attracted Kadyn Hannah to Cal (Pa.).
Ever since he left Franklin Regional, Hannah wanted to play at the highest level of college basketball his talent would allow.
Feeling somewhat under recruited, he went to La Roche and became an immediate impact player. He averaged 13.1 points and 5.6 rebounds and was named the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Newcomer of the Year.
But he still wondered, if his game took off at the Division III level, what might it look like in D-II?
“I have always had aspirations to play Division II,” said Hannah, a 6-foot-5 forward. “After a season at La Roche, I was presented with a possibility to go after that goal.”
And after some careful consideration, he decided to transfer to Cal (Pa.) and play in the PSAC.
Ripping himself from La Roche was not an easy task. He had begun to take root there and was primed to be a returning starter.
“It was a very difficult decision because of everything La Roche and coach (Hermie) Carmichael has done for me,” he said. “I had to take that risk and enter the transfer portal.”
A number of Division III teams inquired after seeing his name in the portal, but Hannah’s interest piqued when Division II programs began to bubble up.
“Cal coach (Danny) Sancomb was one of the few that replied,” Hannah said. “I got in touch with him and loved the values of the program. I am very thankful for everyone who has got me to this point.”
Hannah, who brings athleticism and some versatility to the low block, had three games of 30 or more points, including 36 in a loss to Hilbert when he hade 13 of 21 shots.
He had 32 points and 13 rebounds in a 100-90 victory against Alfred State.
Self belief got Hannah to Cal. Now, he has big plans.
“The goal is always to win a championship,” he said. “I want to be the best teammate possible to ensure we reach that goal. I am excited to be a Vulcan.”
