Latrobe grad Austin Butler selected to USA Basketball 3x3 team
After displaying a knack for making splash plays in 3-on-3 basketball in March at the 3x3U National Championship during the Final Four, Austin Butler was a favorite to make the USA Basketball 3x3 team.
The Latrobe alum’s addition to the team became official Monday as he joined six other former college players on the national squad.
The team will compete in select FIBA 3x3 events this summer and into the fall. Longtime ESPN commentator Fran Fraschilla will be the coach.
Butler, a 6-foot-5 guard who played a fifth season at Charlotte after a four-year career at Holy Cross, averaged 12.5 points and 5.8 rebounds in his final collegiate season. He started all 31 games for the 49ers.
He also played in the recent Red Bull USA 3x3 Nationals.
Butler is trying to find a fit with a professional team, like his former high school teammate, Jake Biss. Biss recently signed with a team in The Netherlands.
The other players selected to Team USA, most of whom are playing overseas of in the NBA G-League, are Isaiah Brown (Northern Iowa/Texas Legends), Hassani Gravett (South Carolina/Lakelan Magic), Khalil Iverson (Wisconsin/Lahti Basketball), Rodney Pryor (Georgetown/Stockton Kings), Keaton Wallace (UTSA/Agua Caliente Clippers), and Jared Wilson-Frame (Pitt/Salt Lake City Stars).
Thankful and excited for this opportunity! ???????? https://t.co/AefG2NR9Qc
