Pirates' Jordan Lyles plans to make scheduled start after testing hamstring
On a night when three pitchers failed to control the Milwaukee Brewers in a 11-5 loss, the Pittsburgh Pirates finally got some good news about one of their pitchers.
Jordan Lyles, who strained his lower left hamstring Tuesday in Cincinnati, threw a bullpen session Thursday and later declared himself “good to go” for a start on Sunday.
“It went well, pleasantly surprised,” he said after the game. “Everything was full go. I tested it pretty good.”
Lyles said when he initially hurt the hamstring and left the game after four innings, he was slightly concerned that he might miss a start. But the next day, his fears disappeared.
“I just wanted to see how it would react in 24 hours,” he said. “The next day, it was just a little stiff. Nothing was out of the ordinary, other than just the normal stiffness and soreness that we felt would be there.”
He said he was encouraged that he didn’t pull the hamstring. He said it was a slight strain.
“Hammy was pulling on me a little bit,” he said. “Maybe a little bit of dehydration that day.”
Lyles (5-2) leads the Pirates’ troubled starting rotation in victories, ERA (3.09), opponents’ batting average (.187) and WHIP (1.10).
