'Huddle Up with Gus': Mike Jarvis discusses his rise through high school, NCAA coaching
As a high school basketball player in Cambridge, Mass., Mike Jarvis stepped into Boston Garden, and he was hooked.
Jarvis, a senior, and his Rindge Technical High School teammates won the championship in front of 13,000-plus fans. But a junior-college scout also had seen the tournament, and he got a scholarship before making his way to Division I Northeastern.
His involvement in college basketball was far from over.
Jarvis joins Gus Frerotte and Dave Hager in this week’s “Huddle Up with Gus” podcast to discuss his early rise and what eventually led him to becoming a successful college basketball coach.
Among the notable stops along his coaching career? Coaching future Basketball Hall of Famer Patrick Ewing — “the next Bill Russell,” Jarvis said — in high school and grooming him for Georgetown, where Ewing chose to play in college.
“Patrick didn’t have to score to be a happy player, he just had to win,” Jarvis said. “He made my job easy.”
