Here's what you need to know if you're attending the Bucs home opener
Getting things started in true ’Burgh fashion for the Pittsburgh Pirates’ opening day will be two of the city’s own celebrities named Joe.
Recording artist Joe Grushecky will sing the national anthem and actor Joe Manganiello, a Mt. Lebanon native who attended Carnegie Mellon University, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch.
The Pirates open the home season Tuesday against the Chicago Cubs for the second consecutive year. The game begins at 4:12 p.m. on 4/12 at PNC Park on the North Shore.
It will mark the 26th time the Pirates host the Cubs in a home opener.
The Cubs won 4-2 last year. The Pirates have gone 9-12 in 21 home openers since the park opened in 2001.
Gates open at 2 p.m. It will be the first of a six-game homestand.
Something different fans will have to deal with this year is the closing of the Roberto Clemente Bridge (6th Street) adjacent to the stadium. It will be closed to vehicles and pedestrians through December 2023 for renovation.
The Pirates recommend parking Downtown in one of the Pittsburgh Parking Authority garages. Prices range from $5 to $8. Port Authority’s Light Rail System — the “T” — is free to the North Shore. Those who typically walked across the Clemente Bridge from Downtown can reach the North Shore via the Andy Warhol Bridge (the 7th Street bridge).
For a faster way to find a parking spot, the Pirates encourage downloading the ParkPGH app or visiting m.parkpgh.org to check for Downtown parking space availability, not just on opening day but throughout the season.
North Shore Parking also is available.
Spots can be found via the MLB Ballpark app, online at pirates.com/parking, or by paying cash upon arrival in the North Shore. There are two parking lots located adjacent to PNC Park that only accept payment for parking spaces prior to game day. Red 5A and Red 6 are presold parking passes.
PNC Park and Waze, a navigation app, have partnered to provide the most efficient routes to and from the game. Waze can provide information on PNC Park parking lots, event-day traffic patterns and street closures. It has real-time traffic alerts.
Download the free app from Apple’s App store and Google Play.
As for ticketing, it’s best to have them on a mobile device in the MLB Ballpark app. Fans are encouraged to add tickets to their Apple Wallet.
Bags bigger than 8 by 5 by 1 inch will not be permitted unless it is a medical or diaper bag. All bags are subject to search upon entry.
Lockers are available on Isabella Street, across from the Willie Stargell gate, starting an hour prior to gates opening.
PNC Park is cashless. Credit and debit cards as well as Apple/Google Pay are accepted. Reverse ATMs that convert cash to a prepaid MasterCard are found in sections 119 and 319. There is no additional charge to use a reverse ATM. Amounts between $1 and $500 can be put on the cards.
