Greensburg’s Offutt Field will get new turf after the Greensburg Salem School District was awarded a $150,000 grant from the Pittsburgh Steelers through the NFL Foundation Grassroots Program.

The century-old stadium was chosen by the Steelers, the NFL Foundation and and Local Initiatives Support Corporation as part of $3 million in field refurbishment awards allocated this year. Since 1998, the program has supported the construction or renovation of 365 football fields nationwide through nearly $61 million in grants.

“A new playing surface at Offutt Field, located a few miles from our team’s training camp home, will bring a new level of excitement around Greensburg Salem Athletics and one we look forward to supporting through our youth and high school football programs,” said Mike Marchinsky, the Steelers’ youth and high school football marketing manager.

The current turf at Offutt Field was more than 12 years old. Turf field generally are replaced after 10 years.

Greensburg Salem athletic director Mike Burrell said replacing the turf was a priority of the school board. He said the board was recently notified about the grant.

He said school officials applied for the grant.

“We’re very appreciative of the Pittsburgh Steelers and the NFL for awarding us this grant,” Burrell said. “The project is expected to begin either the second or third week of June.”

No other improvements are scheduled currently for Offutt Field, but Burrell said other improvements will come at a later date.
