Mark Goetz hits a drive on No. 14 at Sunnehanna Country Club on Monday in preparation for the Sunnehanna Amateur, which begins Tuesday.

Mark Goetz played one of his best rounds in his collegiate career at West Virginia on Tuesday at the NCAA Division I Regional at Noblesville,Ind.

The WVU senior and Greensburg native shot a 6-under-par 66, the lowest round ever by a WVU golfer in an NCAA Tournament, during Round 2 at The Sagamore Golf Club.

Goetz moved up 29 spots and is tied for fourth heading into Wednesday’s final round.

The Kiski School grad eagled two holes and birdied four other holes during the second round.

His 6-under tied for the lowest round of the regional tournament with Zan Luka Stirn of Arkansas State.

“Anytime Mark tees it up, he has the ability to shoot low,” WVU coach Sean Covich said. “But what I think led to his success was not getting flustered with yesterday’s score knowing you’re always closer than you think to great golf.

“He put in a lot of work after yesterday’s round, and it paid off today. He was spot on with his driver today, and when he’s driving well, he’s as good as anyone. Mark’s in great position with one round left.”

Goetz leads all individuals not on an advancing team. Blake McShea of UNC-Wilmington and Nick Infanti of North Florida lead the field at 6-under par. Cole Hammer of Texas is in third place at 5-under. Goetz is tied with Pierceson Coody and Travis Vick of Texas at 4-under.
