Golden Gloves event set for Saturday at Monroeville Mall
Golden Gloves boxing returns to Monroeville on Saturday evening.
The Western Pennsylvania Police Athletic League will host eight bouts at Gloria’s Gym on the second level of the Monroeville Mall.
The bell time is 6 p.m., and doors open at 5:30 p.m.
The 16 boxers who will compete for victories Saturday come from several gyms in the region, including Butler Cubs Boxing, Gloria’s Gym, 3rd Avenue Boxing, Sanctuary Boxing, Cave Boxing, Gold Medal Boxing, Steel Valley Boxing, Boyce Boxing, Boards Boxing and Stallworth Boxing Academy.
Weight classes from 70 to 201-plus.
“It’s going to be a great night of competitive boxing,” WPPAL’s Gloria Sztukowski said.
“These Golden Glove athletes and coaches trained hard and will have bragging rights for the rest of their lives.
“Despite the many challenges all over due to covid-19, the Western Pennsylvania Police Athletic League team pulled together to make the Golden Gloves happen for the kids. The registration numbers were down somewhat, but you wouldn’t know it from the enthusiasm of the boxers, coaches, officials and the fans. All are glad to be back in competition.”
Gloria’s Gym also will host the Western District semifinals Oct. 23 and the championships Oct. 30.
The PA State Championships are set for Nov. 6 in Berwick.
Tickets for Saturday’s event still are available. For tickets or for more information, call or text 412-576-9285.
