The family of Sam Davis, a four-time Super Bowl champion with the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1970s, has announced funeral services for the former left guard.

Viewing will be held Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. at Bidwell Presbyterian Church, 1025 Liverpool Street, on the city’s North Side. The funeral service will be held at the church Wednesday at 10:57 a.m with repass to follow. The unique start time is in tribute to the No. 57 that Davis wore in his 15 years with the Steelers.

Davis, 75, died last Tuesday of a heart attack at an assisted living facility in McKeesport. Suffering from dementia and legally blind, Davis was found after going missing for 14 hours.

In a statement released by the family Sunday morning, Davis never wandered outside the facility during his absence as was initially feared:

“We want to again thank the community, friends and family for support and prayers. We have received the update from the medical examiner who confirmed he has passed away due to a massive heart attack in the personal care home and did not suffer. While we were joined by many in searching for our father, we now know that he never left the facility.”

The family also announced that in lieu of flowers, they are requesting anyone wishing to honor Davis’ legacy to make a donation to the Sam & Tamara Davis Family Scholarship Fund.

In May, the Davis family awarded scholarships to four area high school students and recognized young adults dealing with a parent suffering from a mental or physical disability.

“Pouring into our community and making an impact in the lives of others was who our father was at his core,” daughter Samantha Davis said.

Checks can be made payable to the “Sam & Tamara Davis Family Scholarship” and sent to P.O. Box 59151, Pittsburgh, PA 15210.
