After participating in a series of youth football camps, one in Mexico, former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Charlie Batch landed in the hospital this weekend with what he termed a bacterial infection and “severe” dehydration.

“I’m doing a little better,” Batch said via text Sunday afternoon. “At home relaxing at this point. Glad the worse part is over.”

Batch, 44, posted news of his hospitalization Saturday morning on his social media accounts. Included was a picture of Batch in a hospital bed with a tube in his nose.

“Sometimes your body tells you to sit yo butt down and take care of yourself,” Batch wrote in his post that he shared on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn. “Remember to refuel, recharge and hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Let this be a reminder that the heat can affect any of us, including ME.”

Batch attributed the bacterial infection to possible E. coli.

Batch retired from the NFL after the 2012 season. He has maintained a close association with the Steelers since his retirement. He works with the organization as an analyst on preseason games and participates in various camps sponsored by the organization. He spent the previous weekend in Mexico City, along with several other former and current Steelers, conducting a youth camp.

Upon returning stateside, Batch was involved in camps at Slipper Rock and Saint Vincent College, the Steelers’ training camp home.

The Homestead native and Steel Valley graduate spent the last 11 of his 15 NFL seasons with the Steelers, backing up Tommy Maddox and then Ben Roethlisberger. Batch won two Super Bowl rings as a backup and made nine starts in 33 games with his hometown team.
