Former Penn State star Trace McSorley throws 1st NFL TD pass for Ravens vs. Steelers
In the 23 months since his final action in college for Penn State, Trace McSorley’s experience in meaningful football games had been limited to exactly one snap.
That was a 1-yard carry on a third-and-1 three snaps into the 2019 regular-season finale for the Baltimore Ravens against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Sunday, McSorley got to play again – and it was against the Steelers, again.
McSorley came on in relief of Robert Griffin III (hamstring injury) and engineered the Ravens’ final two drives, throwing a 70-yard touchdown pass to Marquise Brown to pull Baltimore to within a score with about 3 minutes to go in what ended up a 19-14 Steelers victory against the Ravens on Wednesday.

“It felt great,” McSorley said. “It’s been a long few years of just working every day and trying to stay ready. (Ravens quarterbacks coach James Urban) does a great job with guys like me and (rookie QB Tyler Huntley). We stay active, and we’re working all the time. So, he does a really great job of keeping us ready and making sure we’re working to the standard that he expects out of the quarterbacks, and really, out of our offense. So, it worked out, and I was happy that it was able to kind of come to fruition.”
McSorley also had a 7-yard completion to Devin Duvernay among his six pass attempts, and McSorley added three carries for 16 yards.
The nine snaps over two drives played capped an extraordinary two weeks for McSorley and for the Ravens as a whole. McSorley was activated off the reserve/covid-19 list Tuesday after an 11-day stint on the list that indicates he tested positive for coronavirus but showed no symptoms.
McSorley immediately became the backup to Griffin III, who was only starting because reigning NFL MVP Lamar Jackson tested positive last week and could not play. Jackson was one of 15 players on the Ravens’ covid list ineligible to play Wednesday.
“I thought Trace came in and played well,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. “It was great to see Trace come in and play well. (He) gained some good experience there. So, we’ll move forward with that. We’ll see where it goes.”
A three-year starter at Penn State, McSorley holds Penn State career records for QB wins (31), completions (720), passing yards (9,899), passing touchdowns (77), rushing yards by a quarterback (1,697), rushing touchdowns by a quarterback (30) and touchdowns responsible for (107).
