Former Penguins CEO David Morehouse joins Steelers as adviser to Art Rooney II
Former Penguins CEO and team president David Morehouse wasn’t out of work for long.
Morehouse, who stepped down from his roles with the hockey club in April, was hired Wednesday as a senior adviser to Steelers president Art Rooney II.
The Steelers announced in a statement that Morehouse will be involved in community and NFL-related initiatives.
Rooney II noted in a statement that Morehouse was “very successful during his tenure with the Pittsburgh Penguins, guiding them to a championship-caliber team both on the ice and in their community efforts.
“He will help us in many areas in the Pittsburgh community and Acrisure Stadium … We are thrilled for David to continue his success with the Steelers.”
A Beechview native, Morehouse joined the Penguins in 2004 as a consultant and spent 16 years with the hockey franchise in an executive capacity. He was named team president in 2007 and added CEO responsibilities in 2010.
Under Morehouse’s watch, the Penguins won the Stanley Cup on three occasions: 2009, 2016 and 2017. The Penguins also sold out every home game for more than 14 seasons. He left the Penguins after the franchise was sold to Fenway Sports Group.
“This is an exciting day for me and my family,” Morehouse said in a statement. “I have spent my entire life watching and rooting for the Pittsburgh Steelers, one of the most respected franchises in all professional sports.
“During my time with the Penguins, I tried to learn from the Steelers and incorporate many of the things that Art II and his family have done with the team. … It’s a dream come true for a Pittsburgh kid.”
Morehouse is the second former Penguins executive to join another Pittsburgh franchise. Travis Williams, the Penguins’ chief operating officer from 2011-18, was hired as team president of the Pirates in 2019.
Morehouse attended Allegheny County Community College before getting his undergraduate degree from Duquesne University. He earned his master’s degree from Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government and worked in President Bill Clinton’s administration.
With the Penguins, Morehouse spearheaded the franchise’s negotiations with local and state government officials for the construction of PPG Paints Arena, the team’s home since 2010. He also helped the Penguins develop their practice facility in Cranberry. It opened in 2015.
