Former Hempfield standout signs pro hoops contract with Cyprus team
Kason Harrell’s professional basketball career lives on.
Many players in his situation feel like they are alone on an island as they chase down their dream. Harrell, a Hempfield graduate who has been training vigorously in the offseason, literally will be on an island in his next venture.
He signed a one-year contract with Achilleas Kaimakliou of the Cyprus Division A league.
Cyprus is an island country in the Mediterranean Sea, north of Egypt.
“It’s a blessing that I can continue to play basketball at the highest level and see more of the world, so I definitely do not want to take it for granted,” Harrell said. “I’m excited to get started with the team and finish the year strong.”
Harrell played two seasons for the Killestar Basketball Club, Team Pyrobel, in Dublin Ireland. Last year, he was an all-star and scored 56 points in a game.
The Purdue Fort Wayne alum averaged over 30 points to lead the league.
Harrell coached the Greensburg Central Catholc freshman boys in the offseason.
As for Cyprus, Harrell is as curious as the next Googler.
“I’ve seen pictures of Cyprus but did not know anything about the island at all,” he said. “I’m excited to get around and see what it has to offer.”
Harrell said his contract is more lucrative but terms were not announced.
“Just like in Ireland, I know that I’m gonna have to trust God and work hard to gain respect and do whatever it takes for my team to win games,” Harrell said.
