First Call: Tyler Glasnow on difference between Pirates and Rays; no love for Bud Dupree; another Fleury shutout
Tuesday’s “First Call” wonders why the NFL Network is overlooking Steelers pass rusher Bud Dupree. Tyler Glasnow dishes on the difference between the Pirates and the Tampa Bay Rays. We check in on the Eastern Division standings. Marc-Andre Fleury pitches another shutout. And we recall the “Miracle on Ice.”
Tampa Tyler
In a recent interview with The Athletic, Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Tyler Glasnow talked about his recent mentality to pitching.
“I definitely am someone who wants to find an edge,” the former Pirates right-hander said. “I want to pitch angry, still.”
According to writer Andy McCullough, Glasnow “draws upon the vibe of disappointment that enshrouded him for several years with the Pirates.”
That disappointment was largely of Glasnow’s own creation while he was in Pittsburgh. He went from being the jewel of the farm system to a middle reliever with a 5.79 ERA and a walk rate of 5.8 batters per nine innings.
“It’s not like quotes,” Glasnow said. “But just the way people thought. Like, I’m assuming, if you asked people how good I was a few years ago in Pittsburgh, they would have been like ‘This kid (stinks).’”
Yes. Yes, we did say that. Now he’s in Tampa Bay with an 11-2 record over his last two years. In 2020, he was fifth in the American League with 91 strikeouts. And while he struggled in the postseason, Glasnow looks to be a cornerstone for the Rays on the mound moving forward. In part, he credits a change in approach on the mound, courtesy of Rays pitching coach Kyle Snyder.
“Kyle literally was like, ‘Hey, stop trying to throw to corners and just throw down the middle,’” Glasnow tells McCullough. “And I was like, ‘You sure?’ And he goes, ‘Yup.’”
Gee. What a novel concept.

There are more interesting quotes from Glasnow about his loss of confidence in Pittsburgh, the departure of Charlie Morton from the Rays pitching staff, and how he is looking forward to sharing a laugh with Chris Archer about the trade that sent him to Tampa in the first place, now that Archer has been re-signed by the Rays after leaving Pittsburgh as well.
No love for Bud?
NFL Network analyst Willie McGinest put together a list of potential destinations for the top five NFL free agent pass rushers. And Steelers outside linebacker Bud Dupree wasn’t on the list.
McGinest did mention Melvin Ingram (LAC), J.J. Watt (Hou.), Matthew Judon (Balt.) and Shaq Barrett (T.B.). Dupree had eight sacks, despite playing in only 12 games prior to an ACL tear.
Yet that was as many as Barrett. And more than Watt (5.5), Judon (6) and Ingram (none in seven games).
The former New England Patriots Super Bowl champ ticketed Watt to the Seattle Seahawks and Ingram to the Atlanta Falcons. He suggested Judon would stay in Baltimore or go to the Detroit Lions. And he thinks Barrett will stay in Tampa.
Big Bud deserves a little better than that.
Hockey highlights
Even though six of the Eastern Division teams were off Monday night, there was one game of note.
The New York Islanders beat the Buffalo Sabres 3-2. Anders Lee had this nifty, handsy goal right in front of the net.

The victory pulled the Islanders into a second place tie with the Washington Capitals with 21 points apiece. That’s three behind the division-leading Boston Bruins. The Penguins and Flyers are tied for fourth and fifth place with 19 points each.
The Penguins and Capitals play each other Tuesday night.
In other action, former Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury completed a 34-save shutout for the Vegas Golden Knights against the Colorado Avalanche. This save on Nazem Kadriwas the best of the bunch.

That’s Fleury’s third shutout of the season, and his 64th of his career. The Knights won 3-0.
USA! USA! USA!
On the 41st anniversary of the “Miracle on Ice,” ESPN’s Jeremy Schapp shared this great clip from his father, Dick Schapp, back in 1980.
It’s a clip from his ABC News days in the wake of the American ice hockey upset of the great Russian team in Lake Placid during the Winter Olympics.
Love this... Now 41 years ago... my dad brought me back some cool pins... https://t.co/xHEsd9iAoh

The sign on the firehouse across from the Russian embassy takes the cake. Goalie Jim Craig shared this memory on Rich Eisen’s show.
Tune in later today as we celebrate the 41st anniversary of the Miracle on Ice with Al Michaels and @JimCraigUSA
Don’t miss it.

And if I’m a bit bleary-eyed this morning, it’s because I stayed up late watching “Miracle”…AGAIN! (whistle)
