First Call: Corey Dickerson homers, Baker Mayfield shotguns a beer

For Monday’s “First Call,” we look at Corey Dickerson’s first homer in Philadelphia, NXT taking over Rays’ pregame festivities, and Baker Mayfield’s beer chugging skills.

This Bud’s for Baker

Cleveland’s Baker Mayfield is no Aaron Rodgers.

At least not yet.

But he is clearly better at one thing than Rodgers is.

Beer chugging.

Remember how Rodgers was less than impressive in an attempt to keep pace with teammate David Bakhtiari during a chugging competition on the big screen at a Bucks playoff game?

Well, Mayfield took that to a new level at an Indians game.

I assume Mayfield failed to toast Hue Jackson before throwing that one down.

In the swing

Former Pirate Corey Dickerson is latching on quickly in Philadelphia.

He launched his first home run with the Phillies on Sunday in his first start.

Dickerson was 2 for 5 with three RBIs. But the Phils lost to the White Sox, 10-5. He’s now hitting .316 for the season.

Philly and Washington are tied for the second wild-card spot in the National League.

Lookin’ good Luca

Franklin Park kart racing standout Luca Mars is heading to Europe.

The 13-year-old from Franklin Park won five races over the weekend at the Rotax “Stars and Stripes” event at Wampum’s Pittsburgh International Race Complex.

Mars won all three qualifying heats, the pre-final, and the final. That means Mars has punched his ticket to participate in the ROK Cup Superfinal in October in Italy.

Mars finished sixth in that event last year in Brazil.

Didn’t we just see this?

Matt Riddle pulled an Amir Garrett.

The NXT wrestler threw out the first pitch at a Rays game over the weekend. It wasn’t great. So, the mascot heckled him. And Riddle ran off the mound to do … well … what wrestlers do.

May Day

Pirates fans got a quick look at what could have been from the Dodgers over the weekend.

Dustin May was one of the many names thrown around as a portion of the potential return for Felipe Vazquez. If that deal with Los Angeles had taken place, many thought the 6-foot-6 right-hander may have come to Pittsburgh.

May made his first Major League start Friday. He gave up three earned runs in 5⅔ innings pitched and took the loss as the Dodgers were defeated 5-2 by the Padres.
