In Monday’s “First Call,” a look at a backup plan for the Steelers if they don’t draft a “Devin.” A big bat for the Cardinals is coming into Pittsburgh hot. And the Blue Jackets may finally be putting it all together.
Backup planApparently the Steelers have a backup in place if they can’t land either of the two “Devins” in the NFL Draft later this month.
Inside linebackers Devin White (LSU) and Devin Bush (Michigan) have long been rumored to be targets of the Black and Gold. But landing either of them will be difficult from the No. 20 spot.
If the Steelers can’t to trade up high enough to get one of them, Tony Pauline of DraftAnalyst.com said on his podcast this week that the team may be focusing on Texas A&M’s Tyrel Dodson on Day 2 of the draft.
Via Behind the Steel Curtain, Pauline says: “Dodson is a fast pursuit linebacker who’s not just a straight line guy. In fact I think he’s probably better latterly sideline to sideline than Devin Bush, I know a lot of people are going to disagree, but I think he’s got better range.”
If that happens, the Steelers may be able to draft a cornerback, wide receiver or a pass rusher in the first round instead.
Good pickupThe Pirates face St. Louis on Opening Day at PNC Park.
The Cardinals aren’t off to a good start, having lost three of four to begin the year in Milwaukee. But their big offseason acquisition, Paul Goldschmidt, is swinging a good bat.
He has four home runs in four games to start the year. Three of them came on Friday.
Christian Yelich of the Brewers also hit four homers during that series, stroking one per contest. He’s 6 for 12 to start the year.
That’s a hot startWhat are the Dodgers going to do for an encore in their second series of the year? Los Angeles won three of its first four games against the Diamondbacks, scoring 42 runs along the way. The team has 14 home runs. Cody Bellinger has four homers and eight RBIs.
It’s going so well, they even have Pirates catcher Russell Martin finishing games in garbage time.
He pitched a perfect ninth en route to an 18-5 victory Saturday.

Red-hot Blue Jackets
It’s taken a while for the Blue Jackets to jell since they made all those trades at the deadline.
But it appears to have happened.
Columbus has won five in a row, with the team’s most recent victory coming in Buffalo on Sunday. It was a 4-0 win over the Sabres.
Nick Foligno’s diving wrap-around goal was perhaps the biggest highlight of the afternoon.

League to fold
The Canadian Women’s Hockey League is folding on May 1. The league lasted 10 seasons and just recently had games streamed on the NHL Network in the U.S., getting 175,000 viewers.
The American-based National Women’s Hockey League started four years ago. And there was a hope that the two would merge with help from the NHL. But Commissioner Gary Bettman always stayed out of it so as not to show favoritism.
As ESPN.com reports, now there is hope that the NHL may at least step in and back the remaining league.
