District golf notebook: Katie Miller Gee wins 2nd WGAWP amateur
Hempfield alum and girls golf coach Katie Miller Gee made sure the fourth time was the charm.
After three straight runner-up finishes at the Women’s Golf Association of Western Pennsylvania Amateur Championship, Miller Gee returned to the winner’s circle, capturing her second title at the event Tuesday at Sunnehanna Country Club in Johnstown.
Her 157 total for 36 holes was 12 strokes ahead of Sarah White, the runner-up.
Miller Gee, who plays out of Green Oaks Country Club in Verona, also won the amateur in 2019.
The former three-time PIAA champion and WPIAL Hall of Fame member went on to play at North Carolina after she graduated from Hempfield in 2003.
She is married to Oakmont Country Club head golf professional Devin Gee.
Amateur hour
Amateur Tanner Johnson beat a bunch of pros to win the Tri-State PGA Pittsburgh Open.
Johnson, from Venetia, carded rounds of 68 and 76, the former giving him leverage on a strong field, to win by two shots over three players at St. Clair Country Club.
Johnson finished at even-par 144.
Easton Renwick, Mike Van Sickle and Kevin Shields, all professionals, tied for second at 2-over 146.
The 68 was the round of the tournament on a challenging course for Johnson, who doubled down as the low amateur.
Drive, Chip & Putt
A pair of girls from Western Pennsylvania advanced in the Drive, Chip & Putt competition.
Alyssa Zhang of Allison Park and Olivia DeGori of Moon took the top two spots in the girls 14-15-year-old division at a sub-regional qualifier Thursday at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort in Farmington.
They were joined by other local qualifiers Jameson Mather of Wexford (boys 7-9 division), Michael Quallich of Pittsburgh (boys 14-15) and Madison Do of Mars (girls 10-11). These locals advance to the regional qualifier Sept. 16 at Aronimink Golf Club in Newton Square.
